Tattoo pain – what is it like?
Many people who want to get their first tattoo have one question above all: How much does it really hurt?
The answer: It does hurt , but usually much less than you'd think – especially with fineline tattoos . These are known for causing more of an unpleasant scratching sensation than sharp pain – comparable to a very sharp, persistent scratch on the skin. Particularly with thin, clean lines, the feeling is more unpleasant than painful for many.
Fineline Tattoos & Pain Perception
The style of your tattoo influences the sensation of pain.
In fineline styling, we usually use very fine needles and gentle strokes – this often leads to a milder sensation that many customers describe as "more scratchy than painful".
Many who got their first tattoo from me say afterwards that they expected it to be a thousand times worse – and that in the end it was more relaxed than they had thought .
Less painful areas – ideal for your first tattoo
If you're planning your first tattoo and are afraid of the pain, these areas are ideal according to pain charts and user reviews – they are considered relatively "easy" to tattoo :
🟢 Low pain level (good for beginners)
-
Upper arm / outer biceps – many muscle and fat pads = less pain
-
Forearm / outer side – firm skin, few nerves
-
Outer thighs – plenty of padding, comfortable feel
-
Shoulder / back (except near the spine) – reduced pain perception
These areas are often described as "easy to bear" and are therefore very suitable for your first tattoo – especially if it is a small to medium fineline design .
Areas with higher pain sensitivity
There are areas of the body that, according to common tattoo pain scales, are perceived as significantly more intense. These include:
🔴 Higher pain levels
-
Ribs & sternum (breastbone) – thin skin, hardly any padding
-
Feet, hands & fingers – many nerves, close to bones
-
Spine / Areas near bones – noticeably more intense
-
Inner upper arm / groin area – sensitive skin, many nerves
The sensation in these areas can be more intense, sharp, or vibrating – important to know depending on your pain sensitivity.
What else influences the perception of pain?
Tattoo pain isn't solely dependent on the location. Factors that influence your experience include:
✅ your pain tolerance
✅ Size & duration of the session
✅ Tattoo style & needle depth
✅ your physical condition (rested, hydrated, etc.)
Tip: For many, a fineline tattoo feels more like an intense scratching than classic pain – and the body usually gets used to it just a few minutes after it starts.
Conclusion
✔ Tattoos do n't hurt as much as many people fear.
✔ Fineline is relatively tolerable – even for first-time customers
✔ The location determines the intensity (more fat = often less pain)
✔ Your experience in the studio, calmness, and preparation contribute enormously to ensuring that you experience the session in a relaxed manner.
Tip: For your first tattoo, I recommend a spot with thicker skin and fewer nerve endings – for example, the outer upper or forearm . This will make getting started pleasant and stress-free.
